Join us during four days of world-class sea kayak instruction and play. Barrier Island Kayaks is proud to present the 2006 Southern Outer Banks Sea Kayak Symposium—and we extend a hearty welcome to all the paddlers who will join us, and a big thank-you to all our coaches!

Schedule
Thursday
Drum Inlet Paddle
Depart Barrier Island Kayaks shop first thing in the morning heading for Atlantic, NC, to paddle across Core Sound and play in the surf at Drum Inlet on the Outer Banks. A real chance to play and learn from top coaches. This was big fun last year. Pack your lunch and be prepared to spend the day on the open coast.
Friday
Navigation and Weather Made Easy
Learn the basics of Navigation and Weather. This class will be 2 parts—classroom first followed by a practical navigation exercise on the water.
Canoe Safety Course
A BCU prerequisite course for aspiring Level 1 and 2 BCU Coaches. This course will focus on safety techniques and awareness that will enable the paddler to ensure the safety of themselves and others.
Indoor Pool Roll Session
4–6 PM — Learn a first roll or get help refining your roll.
BCU 2 and 3 Star Training Part 1
This course will focus on learning and improving basic skills that will enable the paddler to improve boat handling skill on flat water.
BCU 4 Star Training Part 1
4 Star is a sea award—helmets required
Designed for the paddler who wishes learn the skills necessary to paddle the sea safely in moderate conditions with a competent leader.
Paddling in Labrador
Slide show & video by Russell Farrow. A beautifully done presentation—one of the best we have seen. Door Prize.
Saturday
Surf Session (Helmets Required)
Controlling your sea kayak in the surf is often a difficult skill. This course will focus on picking your wave, controlling your kayak on the wave, carving turns and safety.
BCU 2, 3 and 4 Star Training Part 2
Continue to work on skills on a paddle trip. The focus allows the student to see how their skills are used in different situations and allow for some "discovery learning".
South Georgia Expedition
Slide show & video by Nigel Dennis. Be one of the first to see Nigel's exciting 2005 circumnavigation of the sub-antarctic South Georgia Island. This was on of the most noted expeditions of this decade. Door Prize.
Sunday
BCU 2, 3, and 4 Star Assessments
Earn your stars! Take a look at the BCU North America Web site literature page. Please carefully read over the 2–4 Star Syllabus. See it here.
Standard BCU fees apply for assessments:
$10 members/non-members for 2 star; $15/members and $25/non-members for 3 and 4 star.
Nature Paddle
Birders take note! This trip will be led by naturalist Bob Patterson and guest Ornithologist. Opportunity to watch the Painting Bunting brought out using a unique broadcast system.
Accommodations:
The Water Way Inn is located on our grounds. The area's only waterfront motel. Call 252-393-8027 for rates and availability. This motel books quickly so don't delay.
Camping is available at Cedar Point Campground located 10 minutes from our shop. Tent sites are $17 per night. Hot Showers! Call 252-638-5628.

Meals:
Continental breakfasts. Dinner will be served Friday and Saturday evening. Lunch is on your own. To save time try to prepare your lunch for the day ahead of time. Let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.

Non-Negotiable Cancellation/Refund Policy: Barrier Island Kayaks has incurred significant expense bringing top-level coaches to this event. Because our overhead costs are fixed, refunds cannot be issued for weather or any other reason. We recommend that you purchase trip insurance to be safe. We can recommend insurance carriers we have used in the past, just give us a call.
